An important part of space is the college students that volunteer their time to talk with our escritoras. Undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students have been in student panels to speak to their experiences as Latinx and/ or first-gen students providing wisdom about their academic journey and the path to college.

UT Alumni and Former UT Cross-Country Athlete

In 2023, Valera Tobias visited our girls. She talked about her childhood, her love for running and her journey to college. She also talked about what it is like to be a college athlete.

Valery, who hails from Mexico, journeyed to the University of Texas and has subsequently shattered numerous records as a Cross-Country runner for UT Austin. To learn more about Valery listen to the People of UT podcast.

In 2018, a UT doctoral candidate came to Somos Escritoras to discuss her educational journey during our visit to the UT campus.

In 2023, UT graduate students and doctoral candidates joined us for a student panel discussion. During the panel, the students talked to our escritoras about their academic journey and their path to college.

In 2019, three teachers from Austin Public Schools visited our escritoras. They discussed their writing process and how they have grown as writers from their childhood to adulthood.
